Spark In Action: Hoover Middle School Wellness Center in the Media

Hoover MS Assistant Principal Julia Coffa speaks with KALW journalist Julia Haney

In December, San Francisco media KPIX/CBS & KALW visited Herbert Hoover Middle School's Wellness Center, where 6th - 8th graders find a safe space with comfy couches, rainbow prisms casting gorgeous light, and caring staff ready to listen.

Students use it to take breaks, work through challenges, and connect with friends. One seventh grader shared how staff helped her navigate difficult moments: "They helped me get over some drama and I felt better."

The Wellness Center - like every middle school Wellness Center in SFUSD - made possible through Spark SF Public Schools in partnership with DCYF, thanks to the generosity of a San Francisco donor.

Currently, there are 16 wellness centers across district middle schools helping students feel calmer and less stressed. Together, over the 24-25 school year, the Wellness Centers provided middle grade students 56,000+ individual mental health services.

A Hoover Middle Schooler speaks with KALW journalist Julia Haney about her experiences at Hoover and the positive impact the Wellness Center has had on her school community.
