Champions for Public Education:
Kitchell Builds More Than Schools—They Build Community
“Champions for Public Schools” is a spotlight sharing the stories of individuals and organizations going above and beyond to support San Francisco’s public schools.
At Spark SF Public Schools, we believe that strong partnerships help build strong public schools. One such partner is Kitchell, a company whose long-standing relationship with Spark and SFUSD reflects a deep commitment to public education and community well-being.
Kitchell’s connection to Spark began in 2016 through its support for Spark’s inaugural gala but its partnership with SFUSD began much earlier in April 2008, when one of its employees first joined the district’s construction program team. Since then, Kitchell has played not only a key role in helping construct and build safer, more modern learning environments for students across the city but also in supporting Spark’s mission to ensure our entire San Francisco community has access to an excellent public education.
“Supporting the communities where our employees live and work has been a core value since our founder Sam Kitchell first set that example,” shared Brian Jemo, Project Director at Kitchell.
“We believe deeply in investing in education and empowering young people—because when students succeed, our communities thrive.”
Kitchell’s partnership with SFUSD has grown over more than 16 years, grounded in trust, shared values, and a collaborative approach. “The people I’ve worked with throughout this journey are dedicated, capable, and committed to making a difference,” Brian said. “I’m honored to continue working alongside them.”
Kitchell staff also regularly engage in volunteer efforts, from back-to-school supply drives to participating in the LEAP Sandcastle Competition, demonstrating a hands-on commitment to supporting students and families throughout the District.
We’re proud to highlight Kitchell as a valued partner whose impact is felt not only in the buildings they help improve, but in the lives of the students and educators they help uplift.
