Is designed to build literacy skills for SFUSD’s youngest Black and Pacific Islander students by providing them with the wrap-around resources and support they need to succeed.

Investment Goal:
To augment SFUSD’s goal to improve literacy proficiency as specifically outlined below
SFUSD Goal:
To increase the percentage of Grade 3 students reading at grade level proficiency from 52% to 70% by Oct. 2027.
FY 2025 Goal:
The percentage of AA and PI Kindergarten students meeting grade level proficiency to increase from 52% in May 2024 to 60% by May 2025.
Each and Every by Name Works by…
Focusing on Student Data
SFUSD provides individually-tailored literacy testing reports after the Winter assessment period to each teacher and school leader who have one or more students in the Each and Every by Name initiative.
Teachers can use this data to shape and adjust their instruction, tailoring to the specific needs of each student. School leaders and instructional coaches also use this data to provide added support to students, families, and teachers.
Engaging Families
Teachers, School leaders, and Central Office Leaders engage families through personalized phone calls, quarterly convenings, and distribution of take-home literacy kits. They also host literacy night workshops for parents to build familiarity with the science of reading and the home-to-school connection for learning.
Offering Wrap-Around Support
Each and Every by Name provides wrap-around supportive services that are coordinated by central office, school site leaders, classroom teachers, and other school staff to create individualized student support.
A case management approach to student learning ensures that all students are cared for and feel the sense of belonging necessary to take great leaps in learning.
Culturally Relevant Practices
Each and Every by Name was born out of the work of SFUSD’s African American Achievement and Leadership Initiative (AAALI).
AAALI was promotes the success of Black students and families by supporting academic and social-emotional learning, elevating effective strategies, and cultivating leaders in the work of deconstructing systemic barriers to achievement. This work includes growing parent networks and building coalitions that support African American students.
Each and Every by Name provides a framework for adults to nurture leaps in learning while affirming cultural self-esteem and sense of belonging.
Through wrap-around services, SFUSD’s central office leaders, administrators, and classroom teachers work to ensure that all African American/Black and Pacific Islander students achieve literacy proficiency by third grade.
