Teaching Transformation

Making San Francisco the Best City for New Teachers

San Francisco will become the nation's best city for new teachers through a generational realignment of its public schools and state university—so new teachers arrive classroom-ready, never struggle alone, and stay to strengthen schools, families, and neighborhoods.

We believe every child in San Francisco deserves an exceptional teacher—and that those who choose to teach here deserve an exceptional start.

The challenge: Approximately half of San Francisco's new teachers leave the district within five years. Students and families in the hardest-hit neighborhoods feel it most. New teachers leave feeling unprepared, unsupported, and alone—pressures heightened by the city's steep cost of living. Without change, inequality between neighborhoods will deepen, weakening the public schools our city and democracy depend on.

 If we want exceptional teaching,
We need an exceptional investment in our teachers.

Our solution: San Francisco will redesign the pathway into teaching that runs from the final year of college at San Francisco State University (SF State) through the first five years in San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) classrooms. It will give new teachers the time, experience, and support to become great educators by changing how SFUSD and San Francisco State prepare teachers together.

As a result of our work, up to 60 new teachers will enter the pathway each year, roughly 15% of SFUSD's annual hires, for about 300 over five years.

The impact is deliberately deep, concentrating well-prepared teachers in high-need schools. But the goal is not simply to prepare 300 teachers. It is to transform how San Francisco prepares and supports teachers for generations.

We are helping to build a San Francisco where all children, beginning in the south and southeast, learn from skilled teachers who stay, so families thrive and students grow into the city's next generation of workers, leaders, and citizens.

This is our city.

These are our students, our schools, and our future teachers.

Together, we are making San Francisco the best city for new teachers.
